If I had to sum up the philosophy that underlies the things I am passionate about being and doing, I would put it like this: “words are powerful.” We live in a world full of ideas, and as our culture continues to evolve, the massive conglomeration of concepts, theories and messages that swirl around us on a daily basis will only grow and become increasingly more treacherous to navigate. That’s where words come in. Words are the tools with which we understand, organize, repackage and positively utilize ideas. In this regard, I believe the old proverb is true: the pen (the tongue, the keyboard) truly is mightier than the sword.
That’s why I chose to be a journalism major. Journalism is the art and skill of sifting through ideas and then using words to present them in the right way to the right audiences. Whether it’s writing news articles for the Daily Tar Heel, working to develop the communications practices of local nonprofits or exploring the opportunities of social media marketing, the things that I've loved to do have all involved using words to disseminate important ideas for the mutual benefit of individuals and organizations. I don’t know where life will take me in the future, but I do know that I’m excited to use journalistic talent and powerful words to create and promulgate significant ideas.
